Whether you're splashing into cool water, hiking over ancient landscapes, or chasing thrills in a 4x4, there's no better time to break free from your routine and dive into something unforgettable. So, grab your hat, your sunscreen, maybe a friend or two, and let’s play outside.
WATER YOU WAITING FOR
It all starts at The Beach at Farmington Lake. You step onto the warm sand, feel the sun on your skin, and hear the joyful squeals from the aqua park. Kids leap from floating inflatables while you paddle a kayak across the calm water. Maybe you rent a floating dock or just let the water rock you gently as you float without a care in the world.
Bisti Bay Water Park is bursting with color and energy. Water slides twist and turn, laughter echoes from the lazy river, and every splash feels like a celebration. It’s a desert oasis designed to cool you off and lift your spirits. And yes, parents have just as much fun as the kids.
If you prefer a more scenic route, Desert River Guides can take you there. Imagine floating peacefully down the Animas or San Juan River, your paddle gently dipping into the water while canyon walls and cottonwood trees slide by. It’s an easy escape into nature, with a touch of adventure.
For something quieter, Majestic Enchantment offers a day of catch and release fly fishing along the San Juan River. Time slows down here. The only sound is water rushing by and the occasional flick of your line. There’s even an art gallery and disc golf course on site, making it the kind of place you won’t want to leave.
TRAIL MIX
Farmington’s trails are calling, and they come in every flavor. The Bisti Badlands feel like another world entirely. Here, every twist in the trail reveals a new wonder, like mushroom- shaped rocks, narrow canyons, and surreal landscapes shaped by time and wind. It’s a hiker’s dream, especially for those who love the road less traveled.
Just a short drive away, Angel Peak Scenic Area rises above the high desert floor. The views go on forever, with striped badlands stretching toward the horizon and the nearly 7,000 foot Angel Peak towering in the distance. Hike a little or a lot. Either way, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to pause and soak it all in.
Mountain bikers, get ready. With more than 30 miles of trail right in Farmington, plus another 90 just beyond the city, Farmington is made for wheels. The terrain is thrilling and varied, from smooth dirt paths to rocky climbs. And with our mild climate and elevation of 5,400 feet, it’s ideal for both casual riders and serious competitors.
For a more relaxed pace, head to the Riverside Nature Center. This hidden gem along the River Walk Trails is a haven for wildlife watchers and peaceful strolls. Native plants line the paths, birds flit from branch to branch, and the nearby river keeps everything cool and calm.
And if you like a little competition with your nature, the Lions Wilderness Disc Golf Course delivers. This beautifully designed 27-hole course weaves through juniper trees, slickrock, and desert brush. It’s challenging, scenic, and totally free to play from dawn to dusk.
THE THRILL SEEKERS CLUB
Craving a little more adrenaline? That’s where Bear Automotive Off-Road Adventures comes in. Picture yourself renting a Jeep or UTV, flying down dusty trails with desert wind in your face and the horizon wide open ahead. Whether you want to drive your own or ride along with a guide, the experience is wild in all the right ways.
Then there’s the San Juan Radio Control Club, which might be the coolest thing you didn’t know you needed. These RC pilots soar their miniature aircraft over the desert landscape, performing tricks and stunts that leave onlookers amazed. And they welcome visitors.
Looking for something a little more laid back but equally awesome? Wines of the San Juan is where you want to be. Sip a chilled glass of wine in the shade of sandstone cliffs while curious peacocks wander nearby. Bring snacks, bring friends, and stay a while. It’s that kind of place.
Golfers, don’t worry, we see you. Pinon Hills Municipal Golf Course isn’t just scenic, it’s nationally recognized as one of the top municipal courses in the country. Recently renovated and ready to impress, it’s a must play for anyone who loves the game.
HISTORY IN THE AIR
The great outdoors isn’t just about nature here. It’s also about connecting to a past that still speaks. Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a wonder of ancient engineering and spiritual significance. As you walk among the massive ruins, it’s impossible not to feel the depth of history under your feet. Bring water, bring curiosity, and check the weather before heading out.
Closer to town, the Aztec Ruins National Monument offers a chance to walk in the footsteps of the Ancestral Puebloans. You can explore preserved rooms, ceremonial spaces, and even step inside the massive Great Kiva, still considered a sacred space by many today.
And starting in 2025, Navajo Tours USA is offering a five-day immersive experience that lets you dive deep into the culture, history, and landscapes of the Diné people. From exploring Chaco Canyon and Shiprock Peak to enjoying traditional meals and stories, it’s more than a tour. It’s a journey into the soul of the Southwest.
