City officials, local governments, community non-profits, local entrepreneurs, the Bureau of Land Management Farmington Field Office, and regional partners work together to diversify the local economy. In an effort to build on recreational opportunities the Outdoor Recreation Industry Initiative (ORII) was launched and the community even supported a tax to fund such efforts. Additional sectors that the area is investing in include tourism, manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and energy. Regular community meetings are held to provide citizens the opportunity to take part in this community transformation.

There are a vast number of civic groups, volunteer groups, and clubs in Farmington offering citizens enriching opportunities to network and provide service to the community. For example, the Farmington Mayoral Volunteer Program, Farmington Animal Shelter Volunteers, numerous civic organizations, the River Reach Foundation.
