Whether an aspiring guide, outfitter, gear manufacturer, national park ranger, city parks & recreation manager, or writer for Outside Magazine, the outdoor industry beckons. Join James Glover, community branding consultant and outdoor recreation industry expert, as he shares a fun and compelling snapshot of career choices in the outdoor recreation industry and how Farmington stands ready to jolt your own outdoor career experience.

    We all know that starting a business is an expensive endeavor. Between inventory, building renovations, equipment, and staff, it all adds up. But in order to get the financing and funding you need to succeed, it takes a well crafted and practiced pitch. Whether you are talking to a banker, a venture capitalist, or your best friend from college, you need to have your business idea ready for prime-time. Come learn from those on the other side of the table what they look for and the critical facts, figures, and candor you need to make a successful pitch for financing.


  • 2:45-5:00pm - Permitting on Public Land: Secrets from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
    Doug McKim is the Outdoor Recreation Planner for the BLM Farmington Field Office, where he has spent the past 3 ½ years working with local agencies and organizations to help enhance the outdoor recreation experience. Previously, Doug was the NW Region Manager for New Mexico State Parks. In this information session, Doug will go offer the types of permits available, when one is required, the application process and fee structure.

  • 9:45-11:00am - Brightest Minds at Your Service: Using National Labs to Build Your Product
    Research and development is the first hurdle to getting your cool new product to market. How would you like help from the National Labs right here in New Mexico? Find out about resources and the application process for the SBIR/STTR program during this session. This comprehensive workshop will provide an overview of the SBIR/STTR programs, with an emphasis on those at the Department of Energy (DOE). It will also include information about other agencies that offer assistance and funding in developing your product and how to write a successful proposal. This session will be in conjunction with New Mexico FAST a program of NMSU Arrowhead Center.

    Are you interested in starting an outdoor manufacturing business? Why not learn from those who have already made the leap and own successful outdoor manufacturing businesses? Learn from the pros how they navigated from idea to startup to successful business. The panel will include those in both the food and equipment realms from around the region.
