The Sheep Industry of Territorial New Mexico: Livestock, Land & Dollars

Join us for a fascinating program on the history of the sheep industry in Territorial New Mexico! Speaker Jon Wallace literally wrote the book on it and it's our pleasure to welcome him to Aztec and greater San Juan County. Guests may arrive at 4:30pm and enjoy the opportunity to explore the Pioneer Village and new sheep exhibit in the main building.

Jon M. Wallace is a retired staff physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University. He lives in Santa Fe with his wife. Jon became interested in the history of the American West after a chance encounter with the Journals of Lewis and Clark and obtained a master’s degree in history from University of New Mexico. This program draws from his book, The Sheep Industry of Territorial New Mexico, which received the Fray Francisco Atanacio Dominguez award for historical work on New Mexico and the Southwest Borderlands presented by the Historical Society of New Mexico. The presentation covers the central role of sheep in the territory economy and their important place in the lives of New Mexicans, both the rich (ricos) and the poor (pobres). We plan to have his book available for purchase and book signing by the author.

Please enter through the west gate behind the museum grounds near the Aztec Splash Pad on Park Avenue. No pets allowed during events in the Pioneer Village. Service animals only.  Concessions available.

Special note: The west gate opens at 4:30pm to visit the Pioneer Village and see the new "Unspun Tales: Sheep in San Juan County" exhibit upstairs in the main museum.
