The Village Band's concerts in the Event Shed at the Pioneer Village
hearken back to summer band concerts a century ago. They feature
toe-tapping ragtime. Band leader Hoyle Osborne has arranged several of
Scott Joplin's brilliant compositions for the band, along with other
ragtime classics. Vocalist Jane Voss will lead several delightful songs
in authentically vaudevillian style.
There will be some classic early jazz numbers like the rousing "That's
a-Plenty" and Duke Ellington's "Black and Tan Fantasy". The band will
also be playing two of Mr. Osborne's own pieces – his Rags for
Endangered Species, "Nanuq (The Polar Bear Rag)" and "Manatee Glide".
The group includes several members of the San Juan Symphony, local music
teachers, and other excellent musicians from the area. They are Tennille
Taylor and Cathy Pope, violins, Anastasia Nellos, cello, Mick Hesse,
cornet, John Burris, euphonium, Don Allen, trombone, and Jane Voss,
vocals & guitar. Founding band member Connie Schulz will add orchestra
bells on a few numbers.
Folks should use the municipal parking lot on Park Avenue near the
Splash Pad and enter the Pioneer Village through the back gate. For
additional information, call the Aztec Museum at 505-334-9829.
The Aztec Museum's free summer concerts are made possible by grants from
the Connie Gotsch Arts Foundation, The New Mexico Music Commission,
Northwest New Mexico Arts Council, and private donors.
Concerts take place the second Friday of the month, May through
September, at 7:00 pm in the Pioneer Village. The Event Shed seats
upwards of 150 guests in chairs and bleachers (bring your cushions!),
with some guests preferring to bring their own chairs. Concessions are
available. Intermissions are a great opportunity to visit with community
friends and neighbors!
